University awarded two projects to study Gulf oil spill’s effects

University of Florida researchers will be gauging the effect of the BP oil spill on coastal marches and underwater communities.

One of the UF projects will study the chemical breakdown of oil in marshes and the health of those ecosystems. It will also use two novel methods to enhance the degradation of oil, said Andrew Zimmerman, principal investigator of the project and assistant professor of geological services at UF.

The Florida Institute of Oceanography’s advisory council this week selected 27 research projects, including two projects at UF, for funding from $10 million provided by BP.
