Earn While You Learn

Create an opportunity for high school students to spend a portion of each school day for a semester working at a local business in which the employer would act as a work experience mentor

Plan Elements

Goals

  • Short-term: Develop programs that incorporate on-the-job training and gain acceptance for expanding the on-the-job-training programs currently offered by the school system
  • Long-term: Reduce drop-out rates and expand experiential learning

Organizational Home/Plan Champions

  • Home: School Board of Alachua County
  • Champions: School Board of Alachua County, Chamber of Commerce,  local businesses

Resource Requirements

  • Leadership: Coordinating entity to champion the project, most likely the Alachua County Board
  • Infrastructure: Existing infrastructure possessed by the Chamber of Commerce, Santa Fe College, and the Alachua County Public Schools
  • Capital: Existing systems would be used and would be sufficient for a small number of students; more students would require more infrastructure
